Sharpen your sword

1 Samuel 13:19-22 (MSG)

There wasn’t a blacksmith to be found anywhere in Israel. The Philistines made sure of that—”Lest those Hebrews start making swords and spears.” That meant that the Israelites had to go down among the Philistines to keep their farm tools—plowshares and mattocks, axes and sickles—sharp and in good repair. They charged a silver coin for the plowshares and mattocks, and half that for the rest. So when the battle of Micmash was joined, there wasn’t a sword or spear to be found anywhere in Israel—except for Saul and his son Jonathan; they were both well-armed.

Can you believe it? The Israelites would have to go into the enemy camp to get their farm tools sharpened. Are you crazy? And risk being attacked?

The Philistines were trying to take away their ability to fight them by not allowing them any swords.

That is exactly what the enemy wants to do to us. If he can just take away our armour then we are defeated. If he can oppress us enough we will compromise with what we know is right, blunting our sword, rendering the rest of our armour useless and inevitably we lay it all down. Then we are unable to stand our ground.

Ephesians 6:13 (NIV) Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

V17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

But Saul and Jonathan were well armed. They understood the importance of putting on and clothing themselves in truth, righteousness, peace, faith, salvation, the word and prayer. This is how we will overcome the enemy. Put on your armour and stand.
