Housing the presence of God

1 Kings 8:18 NIV

‘But the Lord said to my father David, “You did well to have it in your heart to build a temple for my Name.”’

Solomon is highlighting here what God had said to his father David. God was commending David for a heart that was eager to build a temple for Him. You see, David longed to house the presence of God in his life so much that he went about doing whatever he could to fulfil this desire. Although he was forbidden to build the temple, God allowed him to set up a tent that would house the Ark of His presence.

Imagine if God said these same words to us. That He was pleased with us because of our ruthless and passionate desire for His presence and making it our number one focus.

Well this is exactly what we can do through our worship and our prayers if our heart longs for Him. We create a tent within us that houses the very presence of the living God through the Holy Spirit by consistently living in a place of praise and communicating with Him.

This is precisely what David’s tabernacle was. It was simply a place of constant worship and prayer that he and his appointed priests and worshippers could enter into at any time and meet with the powerful presence of God. This was a prophetic picture of what we can experience today. God is challenging us to enter into it and live there on a daily basis.

‘“After this I will return and rebuild David’s fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it, that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, even all the Gentiles who bear my name, says the Lord, who does these things”– things known from long ago.’ Acts 15:16-18 (NIV)
