He will not rest
Ruth 3:16-18 (NLT)
‘When Ruth went back to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked, “What happened, my daughter?” Ruth told Naomi everything Boaz had done for her, and she added, “He gave me these six scoops of barley and said, ‘Don’t go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.’” Then Naomi said to her, “Just be patient, my daughter, until we hear what happens. The man won’t rest until he has settled things today.”’
Ruth, the Moabite woman had been diligently working in the field collecting grain to support her mother in law, Naomi. It becomes apparent to Naomi that the man in whose field she is gleaning from is actually a kinsman redeemer.
Ruth takes a risk in obedience to Naomi’s direction and approaches Boaz in the middle of the night, lying at his feet and petitioning him to spread the corner of his cloak over her to signify marriage. He responds by reassuring her that although there is a relative closer in line than him to receive Ruth, he will do whatever is necessary to acquire her as his wife.
The rich man, Boaz, has been generously giving to these widows and this time he sends Ruth home with six scoops of barley for Naomi. In Jewish culture the number six was linked with the first six days of the week on which there was to be no rest. Upon receiving this gift from Boaz, Naomi recognises the code in the number of scoops and responds by declaring “The man won’t rest until he has settled things today”.
While the custom of those times actually required the widow to negotiate with the nearest of kin, God here, reveals a foreshadowing of New Testament grace.
It is Boaz that takes it upon himself to do all that is required to ensure the Promise is fulfilled. He is a representation of our Kinsman Redeemer, Jesus Christ who bought for Himself a Gentile bride with the payment of His own blood. He desires to fulfil every promise He has spoken over our lives by interceding for us before our Father.
YES, you can be assured that He will not rest until the full fruition of the promise comes to pass. Its fulfilment is on the way and only then will He be content to rest.
