Gideon (part 1): God-power will bring the victory!
Judges 7:2-3 (MSG)
‘God said to Gideon, “You have too large an army with you. I can’t turn Midian over to them like this—they’ll take all the credit, saying, ‘I did it all myself,’ and forget about me. Make a public announcement: ‘Anyone afraid, anyone who has any qualms at all, may leave Mount Gilead now and go home.’” Twenty-two companies headed for home. Ten companies were left.’
Wow! Did you ever think that God would want to decrease the size of an army? Wouldn’t He want to just make certain of the victory?
No. The reason God reduced the size of Gideon’s army was simply because He wanted them to rely on Him, otherwise they would be tempted to boast in their own strength and might. In actual fact, by sending home the discouraged and cowardly, God strengthened the power of Gideon’s forces and by doing this, increased the faith of the remaining men.
Sometimes God will deliberately minimise the man power behind you until it looks as if you can’t tackle your situation with such a small army.
This is because when you conquer and win, he wants you to know it was nothing but ‘God power’ that brought you the victory. It is not the strength of man that makes you triumphant. So don’t disqualify yourself for the prize by letting pride send you home!
