DON’T HOARD (PT 2): The leftovers will spoil
Exodus 16:19-20 NLT
Then Moses told them, “Do not keep any of it until morning.” But some of them didn’t listen and kept some of it until morning. But by then it was full of maggots and had a terrible smell. Moses was very angry with them.
The Israelites disobeyed the simple instruction to collect only what they required. Only on the Sabbath were they allowed to collect two days worth in preparation for the rest day.
What caused them to dismiss God’s order is uncertain: greed, unbelief, poverty-like thinking or maybe even an orphan spirit? Whatever it was, the results of their unbelieving hearts were evidenced by the spoiled leftovers. In the end all their extra efforts were in vain and left them with the issue of maggots and a foul stench.
When we don’t trust God at His word, we will be left with the same problem. If we over indulge, and store up possessions, being so future focused and worrying about lack, then even what we have will decay. All our leftovers will spoil and become of no use to us.
So the lesson is to be generous with excess. Don’t run around chasing your tail, burning yourself out trying to store up for the future like the Israelites did. You may also find yourself left with maggots and a lingering bad smell.
