A ray of hope

Lamentations 3:21-25 (LB)

“Yet there is one ray of hope: his compassion never ends. It is only the Lord’s mercies that have kept us from complete destruction. Great is his faithfulness; his loving-kindness begins afresh each day. My soul claims the Lord as my inheritance; therefore I will hope in him. The Lord is wonderfully good to those who wait for him, to those who seek for him”

Can you feel the anguish and agony of Jeremiah’s lament? The nation he loved had been destroyed and taken into captivity.

The sign of the prophet Jonah was nowhere to be seen in Jeremiah’s life, and unlike Jonah, he wept all the louder when he saw his nation taken away under force.

But in the midst of his lamenting, Jeremiah sees the truth, the ray of hope like a shaft of light piercing through the blackness of his dark dungeon.

He sees the God of mercy, the God of reconciliation, our God, who is longsuffering and full of unfailing love. He does not afflict willingly but rather desires to restore his fallen children.

God’s mercy had still kept them from complete destruction, His wrath had been held back enough to leave room for repentance that would enable God to pour out His love once more.

Amidst all the torture and heartache there still remained a compassionate God who, at our slightest turning would begin to pour out His mercy which comes afresh every morning.

Yes, it is true. Jesus is wonderfully good to everyone who waits upon Him and seeks Him out. Oh friend, there is still hope for you! You have not gone so far as to wander beyond the redemption of the Saviour.

“Come, let us return to the Lord. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us; that we may live in his presence. Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth” Hosea 6:1-3 (NIV)
